Chuck Milam

Chuck,
Coach Salo and I spoke this morning. Wed, May 9, at Gulliver’s would work great for him, along with April 19, at El Cholo.
He would be happy to attend both dates, if you think the alums would enjoy it.
Let us know!

Chuck,
I will attend both of them. The next USC Alumni Swimmers' Lunches (always start at 11:30):

April 19 Thursday at El Cholo's Downtown.

May 9 probably at Gullivers in Irvine across from John Wayne Airport. Dave Salo will be there!

On both of these please RSVP Chuck Milam.

I will be at the Swim with Mike Saturday 10-1.

Every year since its inception in 1981, I have supported a scholarship fund for former athletes who are now paralyzed or amputeesso they may continue their education at a university in the USA. It prepares them to become self-sufficient, returns their optimism, etc.  I will swim a mile on one day before April 14, 2012 the day of the "Swim with Mike" at USC (there are others at many universities).  All the proceeds go to an endowed scholarship fund.  Please be generous, but any amount is appreciated.

USC Water Polo Coach Jovan Vavic

Open up the link below to view the article on SC's very successful water polo coach.  About 3/4 through the article, Sandy Gilchrist's (Team Captain- 1967) daughter Kaleigh is mentioned.

At the last Trojan Swimmers lunch at Gulliver's in January, Sandy described his daughter's experience playing water polo under coach Jovan who's coaching style is detailed in the article.

I have been asked if the author, David Wharton, is a former USC swimmer.  Any comments?

This story was sent to you by: Chuck --------------------

USC's Jovan Vavic makes a big splash in water polo --------------------

Coach uses a strong personality to impress his style on men's and women's teams, which have won a combined 10 NCAA titles in the last 14 years.

By David Wharton February 16 2012, 5:00 PM PST Even from a distance, the man catches your attention.

Chuck and Jack,

Hi there! I seem to be enjoying a rare quiet evening here at home with free time on my hands. I wanted to take advantage of it while I can and acknowledge what a great job both of you did in arranging for our last TS luncheon at Gullivers. I thought it made for an ideal venue for our group and I'm really looking forward to meeting there again. It was great to have a private room all to ourselves and the U-shaped table configuration seemed to work well.

I also wanted to share the excitement of watching our Trojan swimmers take on #4 ranked Stanford at the Trojan pool this past Saturday. We are a genuine powerhouse again! Morozov broke the pool record in the 50 free with a 19.49 in the 50 on Friday and 43.00 in the 100 free on Saturday. He's done a 19.06 and a 41.88 and is loaded for bear. Not a Cal Bear, either....

You could sure feel the energy on the deck as well as in the stands. I saw former great Lenny Krazelberg cheering from the crowded stands as well as Fred Shaw and John Porter on deck as well. Peter and Ingrid were both there, too. Coach Salo has positioned both the men's and women's team to be national title contenders. I would encourage all of our O.C. Trojan alums who are able to attend the remaining dual meet with Utah on Saturday the 18th or the Pac10 championships at East Los Angeles College from 2/29 thru 3/3. With a little extra alumni support, maybe we can inflict some pain on Stanford and Cal and return the favor!

Best regards-

Paul

Upcoming SC swim events

Email from Paul Davidson:
USC Alumni,
Every year, on the eve of the Pac-12 Championships, the swim and dive teams join the Trojan Club of Long Beach for a dinner to celebrate the team.

This year the dinner will be on Tuesday, February 28 @ 6:00 PM at Steven's Steakhouse, in Commerce. You will find a flyer with additional information attached to this message.

If you are in the area and would like to share a pre-meet meal with the team, we'd love to see you!

Please call or email me if you are interested and I will get a head count together for the TCLB folks.

In case you hadn't heard, Belmont is presently, inoperable. As a result, the Men's Pac-12 meet has been moved to East LA College. The meet runs from Feb 29 to Mar 3. Please come out and cheer for the team!

Drop us a line if you have any questions!

Sad note from Paul Davidson

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I write this email.  Late Saturday night, Bill Furniss passed away with his loving family at his side.  He succumbed to complications due to pneumonia.

He was comfortable and peaceful in his final hours.  He has left a great legacy behind and will be missed by all who knew him.  Bill was less than one week short of his 92nd birthday.

If you are interested, his funeral will be held this Saturday, Feb. 11th, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church.  A reception will follow at the family house in North Tustin.  Below are the addresses.

NCAA Swimming and Diving

Please consider coming out to support the Trojans in their Championship run!
Ticket Information for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship – the USC ticket block

This year’s meet will take place in Federal Way, Washington. The dates are March 22 through March 24 (Thursday through Saturday)

I was able to “reserve” a block of 30 tickets for the meet. Due to unforeseen circumstances this ticket block is not in an ideal location (it is between the start/finish line and the rear part of the diving pool) but at least we can all be sitting together.

If you do want to order tickets in the USC block I suggest that you do so at your earliest convenience.

The cost of an all-session ticket is $ 70.00 plus the Ticketmaster service charge of $ 9.30. Tickets this year must be individually purchased on Ticketmaster. Click on the following link to get to the appropriate page on Ticketmaster: http://www.ticketmaster.com/2012-NCAA-DI-Mens-Swimming-Diving-Championship-All-Sessions-tickets/artist/1664162

The code to enter for our section (Section U) of tickets is: USCSDChamp.

This code will be active for our tickets through December 16th at 5:00 p.m. After that deadline, any tickets left un-purchased in our block will be available online to the general public. So act sooner rather than later.

Aside from the parents who will be attending the meet Claire and I will also be there, as will Peter and Ingrid Daland. We hope to see many of you there as well.

If you have any questions please e-mail me at
drjcg18@sbcglobal.net.

Fight On!
